Firestopping... YES it is important.
Firestopping, also known as passive fire protection, is installed to prevent fire from traveling after it has started within a building. Firestopping is installed at the tops and bottoms of fire rated walls, edges of rated slabs, and at rated curtain walls. Through penetrations of these architectural features such as pipes and conduits are also firestopped. Firestopping is installed in accordance with UL listed assemblies. Most firestopping products are types of caulking that can be applied by hand, trowel, or spray machine. Specialty firestopping products include composite sheets, putty, mortar, pillows, and collars.
Firestopping is designed into the structure of the building so that if fire breaks out, it is contained within a fire compartment surrounded by fire-resistive walls and floors. For walls and floors to maintain their fire-resistance every opening, penetration, and joint must be sealed against the escape of fire and smoke. |
It is essential that every penetration or joint in a fire-rated wall or floor is adequately protected by sealing – or “firestopping” – such that the building component is restored to its original fire-rated condition.

Facilities Maintenance
Maintaining the compartmentalization of a structure/facility can reduce the damage caused by a fire, ensure occupant safety, and preserve processes. Over time, fire rated walls and floors in your facility generally lose their integrity due to modifications (new penetrating items installed, etc.). If you operate a facility with fire-rated walls and floors, contact us for a maintenance inspection. We can identify areas that are not safe and provide solutions that are compatible with your needs. If you have questions about anything relating to firestopping, we are happy to answer them and make recommendations to restore the integrity of your fire rated walls and floors.
